Evening Kayak/Canoe Course

Courses are described as “Working towards” as progress is dependent upon the individual and whether they have had sufficient time to practice for the assessment.
As a participant you will:
- Be taught by an experienced, qualified coach
- Have the use of the Dolphin Centre’s facilities during your sessions (use of changing rooms and showers)
- Have the use of centre equipment e.g. boats and essential items such as buoyancy aid
- Be granted “Temporary Membership” for five weeks on completion of your course, enabling you to develop and practice your new skills. This entitles you to participate in day trips, Sunday morning and Tuesday evening paddling clubs. (If you do not wish to become a member after the five weeks period but want to attend sessions, you will be charged as a visitor thereafter for a maximum of five visits.)
An opportunity to experience paddle sport at first hand, which will give the participant an chance to get afloat and have some fun in both the canoe and kayak.
Course: Introduction to paddling
The course follows the British Canoeing 1 Star is the first paddling award and the level most participants would reach after completing a six week course and can be assessed in any craft.
Course: 1 Star improvers
This course is open to participants who have their 1 Star in canoe or kayak or have completed a 1 Star course with the aim of improving paddling or have completed the paddle power passport award and looking towards the 2 Star Award /Discover Paddle Power Award.
Course: Intermediate (working towards 2 Star Open canoe, 2 Star Kayak)
This course aims at the British Canoeing 2 Star level in kayak and canoe where the paddler can use fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water to control movement of the craft and have an understanding of how the paddle, boat, and water interact. Skills must be demonstrated in both kayak and canoe for the certificate.
Course: Gateway (2 Star paddlers)
The course builds on the skills of the two star paddler and can be in canoe or kayak and is for a participant wishing to go on to the appropriate 3 Star award.
Course: 3 Star (touring or white water option – 3 Star Sea Kayak, 3 Star Open Canoe)
These courses are for paddlers who are already at 2 Star standard and wish to specialise in developing personal competence as a member of a group paddling in a variety of venues and in a specific craft.
