Activity / Description of the Trip: Launching at Newenden Bridge we paddle along the very quiet River Rother towards the ‘magnificent and evocative’ Bodiam Castle. Time will be available to visit the castle and take refreshments – it is a National Trust property so the tea and cake should be good!
A lazy paddle back to our start point.
A 12km led trip though coaching tips can be given if required.Note that this river has its water level controlled by a sluice near Rye so water level is good all year round and hardly any current.
Craft: Kayak, canoe – tandem or solo
Environment: Flat water
Type of Paddle: Very easy paddling – unless it is windy
Pre-requisites : Minimum age 14 though a lower age is acceptable if paddling in a canoe with an adult. Must be able to paddle 12km with breaks. One star standard or have completed an AD six week paddling course or similar.

Additional Leaders or coaches : Adrian Moon Coach level 3 kayak, 4 star open canoe leader

Minimum number in group: 3
Plan B: No plan B as the Trip Leader is staying in the area so not able to paddle alternative river. If weather is appalling we won’t be paddling.

Transport details: Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements.
Please note that it is normally expected that particpants make their own way to and from the trip start and finish. For trips away from Pangbourne our trips usally start at the river or at an agreed meeting point en route. If you have difficulties arranging your own transport please contact the trip leader to see if a lift can be arranged.
However, we cannot guarantee that lifts are available.
It is expected that anyone receiving a lift will contribute to transport costs.
If anyone can offer a lift please contact the trip leader.
Please also note that for safeguarding reasons it is AD policy to have more than two people in a vehicle if someone is under 18 (unless a relative).
Equipment needed: AD membership
Boat licence or British Canoeing membership card
AD Medical and Consent form should be completed and handed to trip leader at the meeting point.
Participants under 18 must have form signed by parent or guardian.
No form, no paddle
Suitable canoe or kayak. Needs to be fitted with buoyancy bags or blocks. If hiring a boat please discuss suitability with trip leader.
Clothing suitable for autumnal paddling conditions – this includes suitable footwear. Gloves as necessary.
Spare clothing, food, drinks should be carried. Though these can be purchased at Bodiam Castle
Personal medication to be carried and the leader informed. (Note – carrying a laminated list of medication and personal details is useful)
Throwline if you have one.
Leaders to carry usual safety equipment.
Potential Cost : It is current AD policy that there will be a charge of £5 for boat hire. This will be confirmed nearer the time,Transport cost for private vehicles – fuel, parking. Shared costs if sharing transport.
Entry fee for Castle and money for refreshmentsPlease note that some people may choose to link this river trip with the River Cuckmere paddle on 12/10/2019 . Please note that anyone choosing to do this and staying in the area are responsible for sorting out their own accommodation. The trip leader will not take on this responsibility. Any participants under 18 choosing both trips and staying over in the area must be accompanied by an adult. No responsibility for overnight child care is accepted by the trip leader.
