River Thames Moonlight Paddle

14 September @ 6:00 pm - 15 September @ 12:00 am

Venue/ Title of trip: River Thames Moonlight Paddle
Date: 14/09/2019
Trip Leader: Claire Hardwick
Activity / Description of the Trip: A led trip on the River Thames from North Stoke or, weather depending, possibly Wallingford back to the centre at Pangbourne.
This will be a night paddle, hopefully assisted my moonlight. It is 14 km (possibly another 4.5 km, if we start at Wallingford) ). There will be three locks to portage around.
We will meet at the centre to change and organise car shares to the start. Hopefully we will be on the water by 7.30 pm. We will have a hot drinks and snack stop in Goring and aim to finish around midnight (Please note some drivers will be required to drive back to North Stoke so we can fetch to other vehicles).
Craft: Tandem Open Canoe or Touring Kayaks (speak to Claire if you wish to paddle a general purpose kayak or go solo OC)
Environment: sheltered water with some stretches of water affected by wind.
Type of Paddle: Touring IN THE DARK!
Pre-requisites : You need to have at least 20 hours of paddling experience and to be prepared to paddle for up to four hours, so this should be considered equal to a full day trip. Less confident paddlers could pair up with a stronger paddler in a tandem canoe.
Who is leading the activities? : Claire
Additional Leaders or coaches : Ian Flanders
Maximum number of participants: 24
Minimum number in group: 6
Plan B: If the weather is against us, we could do a mini-journey from the centre for an few hour only.
Meeting Time : 18.00
Meeting Location: Dolphin House, Pangbourne. Please speak to claire if you wish to meet at the get on.
Finish Time : Midnight (ish)
Finish Location: Pangbourne
Transport details: We will need to organise a shuttle run to get everyone to the start with as few vehicles as possible. It will be helpful if we have some drivers able to take passengers to the top. Non-drivers, please ensure that your paddling clothes are clean, so you do not make someone else’s vehicle dirty. We can change before second shuttle to collect vehicles.
If anyone can offer a lift please contact the trip leader.
Please also note that for safeguarding reasons it is AD policy to have more than two people in a vehicle if someone is under 18 (unless a relative).
Equipment needed: Please bring a torch. A head torch is best. You can tape a torch to your boat if you want to but NO fairy lights please (we want to enjoy the moonlight!).
All paddlers will be supplied with a Hi- Vis vest and will be asked to attach a glow stick to their BA.
Bring a snack and hot drink.
Boat licence or British Canoeing membership card. AD membership
AD Medical and Consent form should be completed and handed to trip leader at the meeting point.
Participants under 18 must have form signed by parent or guardian.
No form, no paddle
All canoes or kayaks needs to be fitted with buoyancy bags or blocks. If hiring a boat please discuss suitability with trip leader.
Clothing suitable for winter paddling conditions – this includes suitable footwear. Spare clothing, food, drinks should be carried.
Personal medication to be carried and the leader informed. (Note – carrying a laminated list of medication and personal details is useful)
Leaders to carry usual safety equipment.
Potential Cost : There may be parking fees if we start in Wallingford.
