Symonds Yat, River Wye, Kayak and Canoe

|Activity / Description of the Trip:||Paddling on Symonds Yat Rapids – described as one of the most iconic locations for paddling. Introduction to moving water skills – if this applies to you please contact the trip leader to discuss the suitability of the trip.
Development of existing skills.
There will also be the opportunity to develop other aspects of being on moving water such as keeping yourself and others safe on moving water, moving down a large rapid etc. Open canoeists can also practise non-paddling skills such as poling and lining.
|Craft:||Open canoe (tandem or solo) and kayak – PLEASE LET THE TRIP LEADER KNOW WHICH CRAFT YOU WILL BE PADDLING|
|Environment:||Moderate water and large grade 2 rapid|
|Type of Paddle:||Easy paddling to the top of the rapid. Whitewater skills needed for the rapids.|
|Pre-requisites :||Minimum age 14. Two star standard or equivalent eg AD intermediate course. Preferably some moving water experience. Be able to paddle for four hours plus.|

|Plan B:||It is likely that the trip will be cancelled if water/weather conditions are unsuitable. There is a possibility of substituting a river trip such as Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat or trip to Monmouth but depends on group and conditions.|

|Transport details:||Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements.
Please note that it is normally expected that participants make their own way to and from the trip start and finish. For trips away from Pangbourne our trips usually start at the river or at an agreed meeting point en route. If you have difficulties arranging your own transport please contact the trip leader to see if a lift can be arranged.
However, we cannot guarantee that lifts are available.
It is expected that anyone receiving a lift will contribute to transport costs.

Please also note that for safeguarding reasons it is AD policy to have more than two people in a vehicle if someone is under 18 (unless a relative).
|Equipment needed:||AD membership
Boat licence or British Canoeing membership card
AD Medical and Consent form should be completed and handed to trip leader at the meeting point.
Participants under 18 must have form signed by parent or guardian. No form, no paddle
Suitable canoe or kayak. Needs to be fitted with buoyancy bags or blocks. If hiring a boat please discuss suitability with trip leader.
Helmet, Buoyancy Aid, Paddle, spraydeck for kayak ( I know that you know about kit such as this but these items have been forgotten on previous trips!)
Clothing suitable for the paddling and weather conditions – this includes suitable footwear. Gloves, pogies (not ponies!) as necessary.
Spare clothing, food, drinks should be carried.
Personal medication to be carried and the leader informed. (Note – carrying a laminated list of medication and personal details is useful)
Throwline if you have one.
Leaders to carry usual safety equipment.
|Potential Cost :||It is AD policy to charge £5 per day for boat hire. If this applies to you please contact the trip leader to discuss payment.
Transport cost for private vehicles – fuel, parking.
Shared costs if sharing transport.
Launch fee for each boat – payable at Symonds Yat Car Park ticket machine.
We often meet up afterwards in a local pub for a drink and chat.
